I can totally relate to just about every one of the characteristics of a bad boss described above. I hve had my share of good and mediocre ones, and my share of a few bad and one horrible one. Fortunately the good outweigh the bad much of the time, but the reality is that we all have a boss that we just don't see eye to eye with or click with at some point in our working careers. For those who say they have never had a bad boss, I don't believe them.
I am proud to say I have overall better leadership in my department now. But I am on my fourth immediate supervisor in my department since my building opened several years ago. We have also had one really good interim boss that would have offered the job but did not want it because it did not have the worklife balance he was seeking. Granted turnover is common in my industry in general. But we go through not only so many associates but also bosses. Some are better than others of course. But even if you don't see eye to eye on everything you should at least get along with them and they should respect you as long as you respect them.
My last boss did not do that. When he came in, he came with the goal of cleaning up my department. I don't mean by making it better, but by cleaning house and getting rid of a lot of employees. If he liked you, you could get away with murder no matter how bad an employee you were. But if he did not like you, look out because he would look for some reason to document or fire you at the drop of a hat. No more than a month into his tenure there, he was already giving people bad reviews and denying them raises when he had not known them very long. The truth is he was looking to save money by not giving raises and by getting rid of people, particularly charter members that had been there for two years already since the property opened. I had never had one write up in my previous two years there, and then all of a sudden I had write ups.

Once he got rid of someone in my unit, I just knew I would be next. Turns out I almost was. Then I got my lawyers and people from an agency to advocate for me and coach me. Then, as fate would have it, he was promoted and moved to another department in my building. We got an interim better boss, and I got coaching. I passed my review and got a raise. He is doing the same things up there he did in my department. It will be interesting to see how many people up there are still there in 6 months to a year. My current boss has her moments but is decent.
The point is advocate for yourself if you feel you are being treated unfairly or unprofessionally. You may lose, but it is worth a try.
